This is a free-draining medium known as lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA) or expanded clay pebbles. Leca is made by heating mixed sodium with clay in a rotary kiln. The gases expand the clay by large amounts of small bubbles forming. This process gives it a honeycomb structure. The spaces that are formed in the honeycomb structure allows nutrients to be taken up by the expanded clay pellet and released to the plant slowly, over time. The clay pebbles allows enough oxygen to reach the roots of the plants, for many species of plants this is vital.
Leca is used in a variety of hydroponic systems.
